Alton Towers Founder Buys Cornwall Park

Cornwall's Crealy has been sold to John Broome, with plans to turn the family theme park near Newquay into a "premier European resort".

Along with the purchase of the existing theme park, he has acquired almost 200 acres of adjoining farmland. If plans are approved, the Camel Creek Resort will include up to 236 holiday villas and courtyard properties surrounding the largest tropical lake in Britain, tree houses, a pool, spa, restaurant, pub and convention centre. The theme park, which currently includes a mixture of family rides, play areas and animals, will also be updated.

Rides at Cornwall's Crealy include roller coaster Morgawr, drop tower The Beast, chair-o-plane Wave Rider, swinging ship Viking Warrior, racing water slides Raging River and log flume Thunder Falls. The theme park is aimed at families with children up to the age of six. Swampy and Dina are the resident characters. The development is expected to generate at least 950 new jobs and construction could start in the new year.

The previous owners will continue to operate Devon's Crealy, located near Exeter, which this year opened new roller coaster The Twister.

John Broome took over Alton Towers in the 1970s, developing it into a theme park by adding rides such as the Corkscrew roller coaster, a Pirate Ship, the Log Flume and a second roller coaster The Black Hole, before selling to the Tussauds Group in 1990.
