We were invited to the 2021 press night where a host of celebrity guests and other VIPs hit the 'black carpet' and braved the terrifying haunts.
The scale of the event is once again unrivalled, with the attractions spread across a huge site from Main Square and The Yard at one end to Main Street and The Courtyard at the other end. The two largest bars are the Shock Bar and Saloon Bar. There's also a selection of thrill rides including Sling Shot, Ghost Train and X-Scream. Other optional extras are Zombie Paintball and Axe Throwing.
The 10 main horror attractions:
- The Island - new for 2021, and replacing The Colony. Definitely still the longest scare maze, with a mixture of both indoor and outdoor sections. It's completely immersive and features some brilliant creatures, but it was a bit too similar to the previous attraction in parts and a little light on actors.
- Wastelands Penitentiary - this spectacular scare attraction has returned, with the prisoners running wilder than ever! It's a really loud, chaotic and disorientating experience from start to finish. In addition to the main attraction, an impressive fire and light show runs every 30 minutes outside of the Penitentiary.
- The Chop Shop - once again the relentless gauntlet of chainsaw wielding maniacs make this one of the UK's most intense scare attractions. It's an extreme experience and feels like you'll never escape. The actors are very intimidating, so this is only suitable for the bravest souls.
- Twisted Clowns 3D - after putting on a pair of 3D glasses you are sent through a fun house that's filled with creepy, cheeky and sometimes twisted clowns. Most of the 3D effects are surprisingly good, as are the other optical illusions that play with your sense of scale and balance. It's a lot of fun.
- The Cellar: Imprisoned - a horrendous story about imprisoned victims that have turned to cannibalism unfolds, and you are about to become their prey! It's dark, claustrophobic, and the strobe section got our hearts racing.
- Horrorwood Haunted Hayride - a signature Tulleys attraction and always a highlight of the event, so we were excited to jump aboard for a tour of the deep dark woods. There were several impressive scenes, plenty of actors invading the ride and lots of special effects.
- The Village: Coven of 13 - a really effective swamp scene makes great use of smoke and lasers, followed by a series of detailed indoor and outdoor spaces. The new foggy finale was absolutely brilliant.
- Hell-ements - this effective hooded maze returns, and if the thought of navigating a scare maze in total darkness with just a rope to follow isn't scary enough, then the combination of icy blasts, bursts of fire and whispers in your ear, will certainly keep you on edge.
- The Creepy Cottage - a classic haunted house that's not the longest or scariest attraction at the event, so a perfect warm-up to the rest of the event.
- The Circus of Horrors - with an updated show for 2021, Dr Haze returns with his troupe of freaks, performing several 30 minute live shows each night. A very entertaining show, full of weird and wonderful acts.
